WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — Wausau Events has canceled Wednesday’s Concert on the Square and the Wausau River District has called off Dining on the Street in prepration for another round of severe storms this afternoon and evening.
Wausau Events Executive Director Alissandra Aderholdt said she and her team made the call after consulting with local meteorolgists and others that advised against holding such a large event while the threat of severe weather is elevated.
“Wausau is at a level 3 risk for severe storms beginning this afternoon through the evening,” said Aderholdt. “We debated moving to our rain location and were advised that sheltering hundreds from severe weather safely there could present challenges, therefore we are cancelling the concert for tonight. The safety of our vendors, musicians and attendees is always our highest priority.”
The Kari Lynch Band were scheduled to take the stage this evening.
Bother Aderholdt and Wausau River District Executive Director Blake Opal-Wahoske said they hope the weather cooperates next Wednesday so the outdoor events can return.
Wausau School District officials have called off all afternoon programs and activities, and are advising parents to pick their students up no later than 1 PM. Students that would typically ride the bus home at around noon will still be bused as normal.
If students (PK-4th grade) usually go to Horace Mann for an afternoon program, they will stay at their morning elementary school and should be picked up at the elementary site no later than 1 p.m.
If students (5th grade on the East side) usually stay at Horace Mann for an afternoon program, they will stay at Horace Mann and should be picked up at Horace Mann no later than 1 p.m.
If students (5th grade on the West side) usually go to Horace Mann for an afternoon program, they will be bussed from the School Forest to John Muir. Students should be picked up at John Muir no later than 1 p.m.
The district says they want to ensure student safety as the weather is expected to roll through right as students are typically dismissed and/or riding buses home.
