TOWN OF SKANAWAN, WI (WSAU) — A Grafton man is accused of OWI and recklessly endangering safety after he was spotted driving south in the northbound lanes of U.S. Highway 51.
According to a press release, dispatchers began receiving calls about the vehicle as it crossed into northern Lincoln County. Multiple callers reported the driver was weaving erratically while traveling in the wrong lanes.
A Lincoln County deputy caught up to the driver, identified as 80-year-old Rory Hofmann, and attempted a traffic stop, but Hofmann refused to pull over. The deputy eventually pulled ahead and positioned the squad car in front of Hofmann’s vehicle to block its path and stop the threat.
Hofmann struck the occupied squad car and a civilian vehicle. The collision damaged all three vehicles and caused minor injuries to the occupants of the squad and civilian cars.
Hofmann was arrested and faces charges including second-offense OWI causing injury, recklessly endangering safety, and resisting an officer, along with numerous traffic citations. He is expected to appear in court on Monday.
Officials noted deputies did not attempt a Pursuit Intervention Technique (PIT maneuver) due to high traffic in the area.
