WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A Merrill man has reached a plea deal for a battery of charges related to a downtown shooting incident and subsequent vehicle theft in 2024.
Zach Tesky pleaded no contest to multiple counts, including recklessly endangering safety, third offense OWI, and multiple counts of forgery. A judge found him guilty and sentenced him to five years in prison and four years on extended supervision. He will also pay more than $44,000 in fines and restitution.
The incident occurred in April of 2024 when police were called to a home on North 7th Street for a report of a person who had been shot in the leg. Tesky fled the scene before officers arrived and stole a pickup from a nearby home.
Teske was arrested a few hours later thanks to FLOCK cameras, which tracked the vehicle’s movement to Oneida County. Since then, he has been held in the Marathon County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
Monday’s hearing covers nearly a dozen open cases cross-referenced together after his arrest. Additional terms of his sentence include counseling and treatment, plus a full no-contact order with three victims, identified by their initials, and the Cloverbelt Credit Union.
The plea came in exchange for the outright dismissal of four charges, including three counts of operating with a suspended license. Nearly three dozen other charges were dismissed but read into the record, including felony bail jumping and six additional counts of forgery.
The deal also saw one count of first-degree reckless injury downgraded to recklessly endangering safety.
