Javarius Hurd
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — The teen accused of homicide in the 2024 death of Lincoln Hills Correctional Officer Corey Proulx has pleaded to amended charges for the 2024 death of Lincoln Hills Correctional Officer Corey Proulx.
Court records show Javarius Hurd entered a guilty/no contest by mental disease or defect plea to second-degree reckless homicide. He also entered a guilty plea to one count of battery by prisoners; a second count was then dismissed.
The deal cancels a phase one trial, meaning the case will now proceed directly to phase two, which will focus on Hurd’s mental state when he attacked Proulx in the courtyard of the Lincoln Hills facility after outdoor recreation time. Security camera footage shows him fighting back as Proulx was trying to restrain him. The 49-year-old then fell and hit his head on a hard surface. He was declared brain dead a few hours later at a local hospital.
The incident started when Hurd threw a cup of soap in the face of a second correctional officer, who he felt was treating him unfairly. He then ran into the courtyard, with Proulx following him.
Hurd had been facing a count of first-degree reckless homicide, which would have carried a seven-decade prison sentence had he been found guilty. Court records show the charge was amended as part of Friday’s proceedings.
