Javarius Hurd
MERRILL, WI (WSAU) — The trial for a Madison man accused of reckless homicide in the death of Corey Proulx is underway.
Javarius Hurd is accused of lashing out as Proulx was trying to restrain the then-teenager in a courtyard at Lincoln Hills Youth Prison. The incident happened in the Spring of 2024, causing Proulx to hit his head on a hard surface. He died a few hours later at a local hospital.
Court records show that Monday was devoted to jury selection, with a handful of jurors replaced and excused after questioning by the state and Hurd’s defense. Jurors were sworn in twice, and the Judge gave them preliminary instructions just before 4:30 PM.
Hurd faces one felony count of reckless homicide and two counts of battery by prisoners. A second teen, Rian Nyblom, is serving prison time for providing a cup of soapy water, which Hurd allegedly threw in the face of another correctional officer just before fleeing into the courtyard. According to previous court records, Nyblom may testify at trial.
