ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU) — Leaders in Rothschild have announced plans to turn a pond near Wausau Tile and the Ceder Creek Recreation Trailhead into a multi-use outdoor recreation area.
Administrator Ryan VanDeWalle unveiled the plans on Wednesday, which include a multi-use trail around the water and swimming areas for users of all ages and abilities. “We’re really trying to make this an outdoor recreation [destination] not only for the Village but for the Wausau area and beyond. It’s something that our comprehensive outdoor recreation plan has really stressed, using these outdoor features to enhance our parks system.”
A .75-mile loop would surround the pond, making it easy for endurance athletes to train for competitions like triathlons or a Tough Mudder.
Swim areas would include a measured 200-meter lap lane, a toddler swim area, and a splash pad. An ADA-accessible dock is also in the works, along with dedicated fishing areas.
VanDeWalle says he’s also excited to see where the project goes, as future additions could include a water obstacle course and other amenities. Winter plans could include skating areas, ice fishing, and pond hockey.
“Rothschild has a lot of awesome amenities, and this one butts up to some of our current amenities, so I’m really excited to see where this goes,” added VanDeWalle.
He also notes that, for now, the park would complement the current Rothschild-Schofield aquatic center, which is funded for 2027. Though the future of the facility remains up in the air.
Plans also include dedicated food truck parking. Work is already underway on some features, with a ribbon-cutting expected sometime in 2027.
