Kenneth Taylor
WAUSAU, WI (WSAU) — A man suspected of starting multiple fires in the Weston and Rothschild area last August has pleaded not guilty because of mental disease or defect.
Kenneth Taylor made the plea on Wednesday to three felony counts of arson and one count of arson of property other than a building. Investigators say the 53-year-old set fire to the Wausau Noon Optimist Elephant Ear stand, a shed near the Rothschild Pavilion, and the Tidal Wave Car Wash in Weston.
The Elephant Ear stand was set up in the parking lot of the Pavilion for an event. The fire at Tidal Wave was started in a box.
Taylor reportedly told investigators he had started the fires to “make a statement.”
Judge Scott Corbett ordered a competency evaluation for Taylor, who is being held on a $25,000 cash bond. A pretrial conference has been scheduled for April 10th.
