GREEN BAY, WI (WSAU) – The Green Bay Packers and one of their top veteran defenders are continuing to discuss his future with the franchise after months of trade rumors.
According to ESPN’s Rob Demovsky, the Packers and Jaire Alexander have had conversations in recent days about a possible resolution, but all options, including trading, releasing, or keeping him, remain a possibility after the team was unable to make a deal that included Alexander during last week’s NFL draft.
Alexander, 28, has been the subject of trade rumors since the Packers’ season ended back in February, but Green Bay used just one pick on a cornerback when they selected former Tulane defensive back Micah Robinson in the 7th round and signed former Raiders defensive back Nate Hobbs to a four-year deal during free agency earlier this offseason, so the Packers do still have roster space to keep Alexander if needed.
However, Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported over the weekend that one team had contacted the Packers about acquiring Alexander but ended trade talks after the former Pro Bowler declined to restructure his contract, as Alexander’s salary for the upcoming 2025 season is $17,500,000, which includes a base salary of $16,150,000 and a workout bonus of $700,000.
Alexander’s struggle to remain healthy over the last two seasons has appeared to be the biggest issue between the two sides, as he missed nine games in 2023 due to back and shoulder injuries and in 2024 missed several games due to a groin injury, which prompted GM Brian Gutekunst to speak about the matter during a February press conference, saying, “Not being able to be out there at his best has frustrated him, and that has obviously frustrated our football team too.”
The Packers will officially start their off-season workout program on May 27th, when OTAs begin, and it will run through June 5th.
