Wausau, WI (WSAU) — Senate Bill 33 was just signed into law as 2025 Wisconsin Act 34. This act will protect Wisconsinites from being blackmailed, harassed, and intimidated by the use of AI-generated deep fakes by making it a felony. Representative Brent Jacobson explains the act in detail.
” This was an effort, really, by Senator Jacque and I to bring forth legislation that would catch statutes up with technology that always seems to be a step ahead, and one of the areas that we wanted to really address that other states already have is to deal with the expanding use of Artificial Intelligence. Obviously, Artificial Intelligence has some fantastic qualities to it, but we also need to address areas where Artificial Intelligence can be used against somebody.”
“What this bill does is that it makes it a crime to basically take what would appear to be a representation of somebody, but really isn’t, it’s a representation of somebody that’s been manipulated with AI of a person who is identifiable, and it’s done with the attempt to coerce, intimidate, or harass that person.”
They are specifically targeting the generation of intimate synthetic images, otherwise known as “Deepfakes,” and attempting to protect those who did not consent to the creation of those images.
