STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – UW-Stevens is constantly looking for new ways to improve, and a new program funded by a 1.3 million dollar grant is taking the learning process to another level.
It’s the ‘Student Support Services Program’, or SSS. An initiative that aims to help students who are first generation, low income, or have disabilities, reach their full potential through personalized academic support.
Al Thompson, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs said, “Well what they will get out of it is academic advising, individualized academic advising, tutoring individualized, career services. They also will get personal and professional counseling. It’s a holistic model that allows students to have a person that they work with on a daily or weekly basis for their academic success.”
The program – funded through a 5-year, 1.3 million dollar U.S. Department of Education grant – will have it’s office in the Dreyfus University Center Concourse. When the program begins, the 2 and a half person staff will select up to 140 undergraduates to participate.
Thompson added, “One of our pillars is academic excellence in our strategic plan, and this definitely mirrors that… Our director of student success wrote the grant, Dr. Samantha Samreth, we got a perfect score, and from that perfect score we got the grant which is a huge win for us.”
Students will have someone that will be with them throughout their entire academic career at UWSP, guiding them through, almost like another parent. All to help them prepare for the future.
