MOSINEE, WI (WSAU) — The city of Mosinee is working to acquire the former BMO Harris Bank building on Highway 153.
Mayor Pete Nievinski says the property is of special interest because of its location as a gateway to the city. “We want to have control of that building and what happens to it,” said Nievinski. “It is one of the first things people see coming over the bridge. We had heard rumors about some things that could have gone in there that we wouldn’t have wanted.”
So when the land came back up for sale, Nievinski says the city council was happy to negotiate. He adds that he has faith in the city’s track record of redeveloping properties and getting land back on the tax rolls. “Kind of like we did with Cobblestone Hotel and Suites across the street [from City Hall.] We bought that [property] so we could control the development.”
There are no plans for the site, though Nievinski says the first choice would be commercial redevelopment. If all else fails, the land could be used for a new City Hall.
Nievinski says the deal should close this week, and planning will get underway after the 2026 budget process is complete. He estimates that work on the site could begin as soon as next year.
