STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU) — A project more than ten years in the making took a significant step forward this week when crews positioned themselves to begin demolishing a building at 1039 Ellis Street to make way for a new City Hall.
“This project represents real momentum for our community,” said Mayor Mike Wiza in a press release. “I’m grateful for the collaboration between the City and Portage County that helped move this effort forward, and I’m excited to see a new City Hall take shape that both serves our residents, provides a quality workplace for employees, and pays tribute to the historic Weber Tackle building that once stood on this site. It’s a great example of respecting our past while investing in our future.”
Residents won’t see any significant progress at the site for some time. Early work will focus on abatement and the removal of salvageable materials. Crews will also focus on site prep, including temporary fencing.
Active demolition will begin in mid to late February and last through May. Residents are asked to avoid the site during active demolition if possible.
City leaders have set up a dedicated website with more information.
